Representatives from the International Rowing Federation, FISA, have completed a series of inspection visits for venues bidding to host the 2015 World Rowing Championships.
FISA’s bid inspection team, which was made up of executive director, Matt Smith, events director Svetla Otzetova, events manager Colleen Orsmond and marketing director Andrew Couper, visited the five bidders – Aiguebelette (France), Brandenburg (Germany), Brest (Belarus), Strathclyde (Great Britain) and Varese (Italy) – to assess their ability to host a World Rowing Championships.
The selection process for a venue to host a World Rowing event requires each candidate to go through a series of procedures, beginning with a submission of the preliminary bid questionnaire and budget. The FISA team then works through the questionnaire which covers all aspects of the bid, including the technical provisions (the course and venue facilities), environmental sustainability measures, weather conditions, accommodation and transport proposals, commercial rights, television production and promotion of the event. FISA focuses heavily on the provisional bid budget to ensure that the bidding committees have budgeted accurately and adequately to be able to host the event as planned.
“The bar has been raised for the candidacy process,” says Smith, “both in terms of the sports facilities that are required to ensure our athletes have the best and fairest racing conditions and in how the spectator experience can be improved, whether through entertainment or other programmes.
“In addition, great attention is paid to the impact on the environment that a World Championships could have on the host’s environment. All these factors, and more, mean that a tremendous amount of thought and planning must go into each bid, and all five candidates for the 2015 World Rowing Championships have submitted preliminary bids of very high quality.”
The inspection team is responsible for managing the bid process. As well as visiting the sites and checking that all aspects have been clearly understood and requirements adhered to, they provide guidance and feedback to the bidders. The Bidding Committees then present their bids to the FISA Council on 18 June 2011 in Hamburg, Germany. It is the Council that will select the most suitable candidate or candidates and propose their selection to the FISA Congress for the final attribution.
The Council is to select the preferred candidate(s) by 30 June 2011 and then, the FISA Congress, which consists of a representative from each national rowing federation casts their votes. The Congress will be held after this year’s World Rowing Championships in Bled (5 September 2011).
