2010 TOP 10 ROWERS

To be eligible to appear as a Top 10 Male or Female rower, athletes had to have been active at elite international level in the current year by taking part at an Olympic Games, Final Olympic Qualification Regatta, World Rowing Championships or Rowing World Cup. All-Time Olympic and World Championship results have been taken into account with a weighting to favour Olympic medals three times higher than World Championship medals. World Championship medals in international boat classes are attributed half the value of a World Championship medal in an Olympic boat class.
Regarding points attribution to Olympic boat classes: Past Olympic boat classes cease to be considered as Olympic boat classes at the end of the year in which they were part of the Olympic programme for the last time. Present Olympic boat classes began to be considered as an Olympic boat class two years prior to the year in which they were part of the Olympic programme for the first time.
Ranking is sorted according to gold medal points, then silver, then bronze. Athletes are listed in order of ranking.

German spring marked by 6km trials

The arrival of spring in Germany means one thing for national team rowers; team testing. The German national team has just completed ergometer testing and a 6km on-the-water time trial in Leipzig, Germany. This is the first measure for the athletes as they head into the 2011 season.

Racing in the women’s pair, Kerstin Hartmann and Marlene Sinnig reinstated their dominance by posting a handy win and being the only women’s crew to go under 24 minutes over the 6km distance. Hartmann and Sinnig were the German pair for 2010 and these trials put them in good stead to keep their spot.

The men’s pair was much tighter. Fifteen boats (of the 35 that raced) all finished within a minute of each other. Kristof Wilke and Richard Schmidt took line honours in a time of 21:29 beating Sebastian Schmidt and Toni Siefert who came in second. The 2010 pair combination that raced at the World Rowing Championships, Andrew Kuffner and Eric Johannesen, finished third.

The lightweight men’s pair was won by twins Jochen and Martin Kuehner. The duo won gold last year at the World Rowing Championships in the lightweight men’s eight and also raced to fourth in the lightweight four. In second were Bastian Siebt and Lars Wichert who were also part of the 2010 eight. Wichert also won gold in the lightweight quad and completed his World Champs racing by finishing fifth in the lightweight pair. Matthias Shoemann-Finck is back from injury and came in third, racing with brother Jost.

The women’s single turned out to be incredibly tight with Anne Katrin Thiele winning by just one second over Juliane Domsheit and Britta Oppelt who finished in a dead heat time of 25:28. A full field of 17 rowers competed in this event.

Marie-Louise Draeger was back on top in the lightweight women’s single scull. She stayed ahead of Anja Noske who finished second after a powerful last 1000m push.

For the men’s single scull Marcel Hacker is back after a break from racing for much of last year. Hacker put himself right back on top, winning by a margin of 11 seconds over 20-year-old Lauritz Schoof. Schoof raced to fourth at the 2010 World Rowing Championships in the men’s quadruple sculls.

In the lightweight men’s single scull Lars Hartig clocked a time of 22:57 to win. This time would have made him second fastest overall, just four seconds behind Hacker. Hartig was part of the winning lightweight men’s quadruple sculls from 2010.

World Champ bids for 2015 in the spotlight

Representatives from the International Rowing Federation, FISA, have completed a series of inspection visits for venues bidding to host the 2015 World Rowing Championships.

FISA’s bid inspection team, which was made up of executive director, Matt Smith, events director Svetla Otzetova, events manager Colleen Orsmond and marketing director Andrew Couper, visited the five bidders – Aiguebelette (France), Brandenburg (Germany), Brest (Belarus), Strathclyde (Great Britain) and Varese (Italy) – to assess their ability to host a World Rowing Championships.

The selection process for a venue to host a World Rowing  event requires each candidate to go through a series of procedures, beginning with a submission of the preliminary bid questionnaire and budget. The FISA team then works through the questionnaire which covers all aspects of the bid, including the technical provisions (the course and venue facilities), environmental sustainability measures, weather conditions, accommodation and transport proposals, commercial rights, television production and promotion of the event.  FISA focuses heavily on the provisional bid budget to ensure that the bidding committees have budgeted accurately and adequately to be able to host the event as planned.

“The bar has been raised for the candidacy process,” says Smith, “both in terms of the sports facilities that are required to ensure our athletes have the best and fairest racing conditions and in how the spectator experience can be improved, whether through entertainment or other programmes.

“In addition, great attention is paid to the impact on the environment that a World Championships could have on the host’s environment. All these factors, and more, mean that a tremendous amount of thought and planning must go into each bid, and all five candidates for the 2015 World Rowing Championships have submitted preliminary bids of very high quality.”

The inspection team is responsible for managing the bid process. As well as visiting the sites and checking that all aspects have been clearly understood and requirements adhered to, they provide guidance and feedback to the bidders. The Bidding Committees then present their bids to the FISA Council on 18 June 2011 in Hamburg, Germany.  It is the Council that will select the most suitable candidate or candidates and propose their selection to the FISA Congress for the final attribution.

The Council is to select the preferred candidate(s) by 30 June 2011 and then, the FISA Congress, which consists of a representative from each national rowing federation casts their votes.  The Congress will be held after this year’s World Rowing Championships in Bled (5 September 2011).

take that (video and lyrics)

Standing, on the edge of forever,
At the start of whatever,
Shouting love at the world.
Back then, we were like cavemen,
We’d beam at the moon and the stars,
Then we forgave them.

We will meet you where the lights are,
The defenders, of the faith we are.
Where the thunder turns around they’ll run so hard we’ll tear the ground away.

You know no one dies, in these love town lies,
Through our love drowned eyes, we’ll watch you sleep tonight.

Although no one understood we were holding back the flood,
Learning how to dance the rain.
We were holding back the flood they said we’d never dance again.

Bleeding, but none of us leaving,
Watch your mouth son or you’ll find yourself floating home.
Here we come now on a dark star, seeing demons, not what we are.

Tiny minds and eager hands hands will try to strike but now will end today.

There’s progress now where there once was none, where there once was ah, then everything came along.

Although no one understood, we were holding back the flood learning how to dance the rain.
There was more of them than us now they’ll never dance again.

Although no one understood there was more of them than us learning how to dance the rain, We were holding back the flood they said we’d never dance again.

We will meet you where the lights are,
The defenders, of the faith we are.
Where the thunder turns around they’ll run so hard we’ll tear the ground away.

Although no one understood, there was more of them than us learning how to dance the rain.
(learning how to dance the rain)
There was more of them than us now they’ll never dance again.

Now we’ll never dance again.

OXFORD WIN 2011 XCHANGING BOAT RACE

Oxford won the toss and their President Ben Myers chose the Surrey station - always the safer option despite the last four Boat Races having been won on Middlesex.
As the crowds waited in keen anticipation of the race, the afternoon suddenly cooled and a south westerly breeze blew up, creating chilly conditions for spectators all along the course. The crews warmed up downriver below Putney Bridge before moving up onto the start as 5pm approached, and as the flotilla of launches jockeyed for position on the incoming tide umpire Rob Clegg dropped his red flag and the 157th Boat Race was under way.
Cambridge rated 47 strokes a minute on the Middlesex station against Oxford at 46, with honours even as both crews reduced their rates approaching the boathouses on Putney Embankment. The Dark Blues had the edge after the first minute, still rating 39 with Cambridge at 38, but approaching Fulham football ground it was Oxford who were warned twice by the umpire. Despite the blip their cox Sam Winter-Levy took them back on course and they maintained the advantage, and with both crews rating 35 Oxford reached the first timing position at the Mile in 3 mins 49 secs, one second ahead of the opposition.
Passing Harrods Repository Oxford began to build their attack to create the key point of the race. Packing on the pressure, but with a minimal rate increase, they began to ease away to create a three second advantage by Hammersmith Bridge, which they reached in 6 mins 52 secs. Leading the way by just one length at St Paul’s School boathouse they finally broke clear at the top of Chiswick Eyot, still rating 34, while for a brief moment Cambridge raised the rate by one pip and Liz Box steered them tight on the corner to try and claw back the deficit.
It was to no avail - the margin between the two crews was six seconds at Chiswick Steps, which Oxford reached in 10 mins 44 secs, looking increasingly confident as they capitalised on their advantage. Cambridge were rating 34 along Corney Reach and gathering themselves for one final push as the final Middlesex bend was in their favour.
But with ten seconds dividing the crews at Barnes Bridge, where Oxford’s time was 14 mins 34 secs, Winter-Levy was able to steer where he liked, denying Cambridge the final edge. The Light Blues upped the rate to 36 strokes a minute as the Mortlake Brewery came in sight, but it was too late. Oxford were able to hold them off with ease, crossing the line in 17 mins 32 secs to take a four length verdict over Cambridge, who were 12 secs adrift at the Finish.

IMPORTANT NOTICE ABOUT WINTECH HEEL RESTRAINTS which originates in the UK but may be applicable in other countries - There has recently been a problem found with WinTech heel restraints after a sculler in Evesham capsized and found that one of her heel restraints broke when she tried to extract her feet. The point of failure was where the cord is attached to a plastic clip. Fortunately she did manage to wriggle her feet out of her shoes.
OarSport - the distributors of WinTech boats in the UK - have suggested the following work round, whilst they come up with a plan of action with WinTech: By-pass the plastic clip and secure a separate lace directly to the metal eye on the heel.
The advice from the British Rowing Safety Advisor to umpires at control commission is as follows: "Control commission checks should look very carefully at these boats and if there is any doubt about the heel restraint mechanism, they should require additional laces to be added."
